Hardware features I want in my ideal smartphone
The new year is here, CES and various other tech events are due to be happening in January.
The rumour mills are speculating about various new smartphones soon to be anounced by a selection of companies.
In case anyone has a magic wand laying aorund here is my wishlist of physical features in my ideal smartphone:
- An easily removable battery which can last for at least two days of real world use between charges.
- A real keyboard which is possible to thumb type on and is perminently at the bottom of the smart phone ala Palm Treo / Centro, or Blackberry.
- A touch screen which it is possible to use a stylus on (and a proper metal bodied stylus).
The 320 x 320 screens on a Treo 650 or 680 are in my opinion the perfect size.
- Two SDHC card slots - at least one of which can be accessed without having to take the smartphone apart first.
- Bluetooth, GPRS and WiFi connectivity (I'm not that fussed about having a camera included - especially if it comes down to a choice between 2 memory slots or one memory slot and a camera).
- A phone which uses 3G and (very importantly) has a mini plug socket to allow an external antenna to be attached.
- A mini USB socket to use for charging and syncing with a computer.
- An additional socket - this time a multi pin dock connector (similar to the one used by Apple on it's iPods, or those traditionaly used by Palm).
This dock connector would allow a standard VGA screen, standard USB keyboard and standard USB mouse to be connected to the smart phone.
I'm not really building up any great hopes.... but it doesn't do any harm to dream.

laptop taken over by World Of Goo
While trying to work on my iBook in a horizontal position (still feel too grotty to sit upright at a desk) I took a 5 minute concentration break to try out the World Of Goo demo.
The big mistake I made was to reply to a question about what I was doing by showing the game to my girlfriend while I went in search of food.
By the time I'd got back in the lounge she was sat in an arm chair playing with Goo balls on my iBook - something she continued doing for the next quite a few hours.
Eventually I had to purchase a copy for the Wii (newly available in Europe via WiiWare download for 1500 Wii Points) just to get the iBook back.
If you liked Lemmings and Tetris then I would thoroughly recommend World Of Goo by 2D Boy - currently on Mac, PC and Wii with a Linux version it's way.
Just like Lemmings and Tetris, however it's rather adictive, but has the added claim of a physics engine to do the maths (so you can try to claim that playing it is educational).

an early New Years Resolution
The Blog Pages on Mostly 4 Macs will get blogged onto in 2009 on a semi-regular basis....
Watch this space because as everyone knows New Years resolutions are made to be broken.

slipped schedules due to runny noses
Christmas will soon have come and Christmas will soon have gone. Unfortunately my self-imposed time scale for getting the work
behind the scenes on mostly4macs.co.uk and YetAnotherList.co.uk has come and gone as well.
I have mostly got my voice back though (and hopefully will feel well enough to concentrate for more than 10 minutes at a time soon).

recovering from flu the tech way
As if coughing, spluttering, and feeling like crap wasn't bad enough, I've now started to feel a bit better and lost my voice instead.
However, having spent over a week laid up already another few days extra unable to communicate with people isn't an option.
So this is where the tech part comes in.....
Many people who are long term Mac users will be aware of the ease of getting the machine to talk using only built in applications.
By making use of this it was possible to make temporary changes my answerphone messages explaining that the only way I could reply would be email or SMS.
For face to face conversions my battered old faithful Palm Treo 650 came into use.
Having tweaked the font settings to make it easier for other people to read the built in memo application became my voice.

changes afoot
Big changes are afoot with the mostly4macs.co.uk website....
several things should finally be getting finished (although because most of it is 'under the hood' it won't be immediately obvious when it's done).
On the surface, some graphical changes should tidy the site up a bit.
The resources section should also finally become useable, the blog pages should get written in and the page titles, plus general structure within the links section
the links section will also be getting mirrored on a new site (YetAnotherList.co.uk) which will also contain it's own (list based) resources.
Finally, an existing forum at mostly4macs.proboards.com which has always been used in the past as a sample will start being used 'live'.
