Computers now seem to be everywhere and have become so central to our lives that it seems almost unimaginable that day to day activities could continue without them.
Before the advent of personal computers (which could sit on a desk) computers were large and expensive mainframes which occupied a great deal of physical space. These earlier computers are the subject of the links included on this page and help to show the heritage of where modern computers have come from.
